Teen Room Windows

Nancy Mizuno Elliott and I teamed up to design, create and install an illuminated window project for the new Castro Valley Library which opened in October 2009. We developed the Idea together, Nancy made the drawings and I designed and executed the final project. The project uses LED light to illuminate a drawing etched into acrylic. The light sources are covered by aluminum panels, powder coated to represent the Castro Valley landscape, below and anodized aluminum strips above.

A description from the brochure published by the Alameda County Public Art Program: "Libraries are sites where imagination and knowledge intersect.  Stellar constellations are [an interpretation] of nature; a combination of science and storytelling. Throughout history, constellations have provided civilizations [a vehicle] to perceive shapes and reference myths...Both libraries and and the stars are portals of possibilities the enable us to reflect upon culture, time, space and life."

"The teens are presented as constellations - leaping into the sky, reaching outward and moving forward. Like the stars, young adults symbolize hope and the belief in infinite possibilities. Their continuous expansion teaches us to embrace the future and leads us in new directions."
